"ImproVeto" is a GM-less mini storygame that lets you tell absurd, fun stories together with at least one other person.

It's also a game to help you practice improvisation in collaborative storytelling and the use of the X-card and similar calibration tools for role-playing games.

Why it exists

Do you ever find that actually using the X-Card or a similar tool in your games can be hard? Do you ever worry that you won't be able to quickly adapt your scene or plot after someone x-ed an element you had prepared as the GM? Do you ever think that your spontaneous ideas are boring and won't make a good story in games that ask players to make up things on the spot? Yes? Me too. And also a bunch of my friends.

So I decided to make a game where we can practice all that in a dedicated space without having to worry about messing up the bigger picture of our game or campaign.

Turns out, it's a lot of fun! And I hope it also helps us realize that the ideas we thought were boring are actually pretty cool (at least according to our fellow players), that it's actually not that hard to change things on the spot, and that vetoing things gets easier the more we do it.

If you try it, please tell me in a comment or email (my address is on my profile here) how the game worked for you!

How it works

Roll up a starter scenario like "an octopus in a shopping mall wants to find a magic item but is hindered by tribbles" and start telling a fun story that will be interrupted by your fellow players' random vetos and make you change direction after a few sentences, after which the next player continues.

If you want even more of a challenge, throw in one or more of the veto variations and change locations, moods, or add new items or characters to the story with every veto!

This no-prep game for two or more players can be played in 10-15 minutes as a short warm-up during a Session Zero or before a regular TTRPG session. Or it can be played on its own for a quick gaming session of up to an hour or two. You could even play it over real-time text message or over the phone if you like!

What you get

The game (available in English and German) has been playtested multiple times and contains everything you need to play:

  • Instructions for the game
  • Random-roll tables for starter scenarios and veto variations
  • Some ideas for improvised storytelling
  • A drawing of an octopus in a shopping cart and a bunch of tribbles (okay, you don't really need that, but it looks adorable!)

Just add 1 or more six-sided dice (D6) and you're good to go!

Besides the PDF (one A4 page) there's also a plaintext version in a TXT file.

ImproVeto

Was du bekommst

Update November 2022: Version v1.2 with updated contact data and a new background color (as in Tiny Tome).

Reviews / Rezensionen

"ImproVeto [is the] best game I’ve ever read to introduce people both to improvisation and safety tools"
"When playing TTRPGs, improvisation is a skill that is often required and all doesn't necessarily come easily or naturally to all. A game like this is a great idea because it gives a fun way to practice those skills. I also really loved its focus on the X-Card [...] this offers a fun way to practice the use of such tools also, and is GMless!"

Between 2:02:19 and 2:08:22, Megan, Edaureen, and Mads talk about ImproVeto and praise it for building foundational skills in both new and old roleplayers and making TTRPGs more accessible.

I used to play an improvised game of collaborative fairytale/storytelling and for long I searched a viable way to truly bring it to life, to step up this game. That's exactly what ImproVeto brought me !

I had such a great laugh playing with my friends this morning, even if it was only for a short time. Truly amazed by our imagination and the fun brought by ImproVeto !

This game a lot of fun and a great tool to get used to collaborative and construcive conversations at the gaming table.

(+5)

This is an incredible and ingenious tool to teach players both improvisational skills and the flow of using safety tools like the x-card naturally.

I would say this is a great icebreaker for a new group to get to know each other if they never played before, even?

Lovely stuff

I added it to the safety tools collection I keep!
